grew up in Kansas and indeed, some of her earliest musical memories were of singing in church. "My mom sang louder than anyone else and it really embarrassed me, even though she sounded good!" She grew up to be a loud singer herself, and has been heard on the opera stage, singing jazz in a streetcar in Germany, as a soprano with a choir in cathedrals, and in musicals in the Maine woods. She has an undergrad degree in Music Education from Kansas State University and a master's degree in Voice from the College-Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati. "There's no time I feel closer to God than when I am singing in church, whether a solo or leading congregational singing. I just feel a radiance in my body that connects me with the Spirit." Susan is a member of Boulder Mennonite Church and works in corporate training.

Arlen Hershberger http://www.mennomusic.org/Home/Steering_Committee:CB6=ArlenHershberger.html@CB1 grew up in the Lower Deer Creek Mennonite Church, Kalona Iowa, where four generations of his family attended before him. From a very young age he participated in Sunday School and Bible School singing activities, often being called upon to sing with his twin brother. At Iowa Mennonite School Arlen first led singing in the daily chapel services and sang in several men's quartets. Arlen attended Hesston College and, as a music major specializing in choral literature and conducting under Daniel Moe at the University of Iowa, he developed the first choir in the nearly one hundred year history of Lower Deer Creek Church. While living in Chicago in the early seventies, he formed, led, and accompanied the Lawndale Choir, an inner city choir that traveled extensively throughout the mid-western and eastern Mennonite Churches. Arlen currently directs choral activities at First Mennonite Church of Denver and conducts the Front Range Mennonite Choir. He is also a member of the steering committee for The Spirituals Project and directs the Spirituals Project Choir. grew up singing in the congregation of West UnionMennonite Church near Parnell, Iowa. She remembers listening to herMother's strong soprano and hearing the altos, tenors and bassesnearby. At that time, the church was singing out of the black ChurchHymnal and the brown Life Songs, which often contained shaped notes.

In high school Roberta sang in the Iowa Mennonite School 1968-69 touring choir.  The choir introduced hymns from that year's new red hymnal, "The Mennonite Hymnal," as part of their touring program.

Roberta does not come to the MSMH with formal musical training, butwith the informal "training" she has received as a participant inchurch singing. She is more of an organizational worker than a musicalone, and is dedicated to helping create opportunities for all who wishto sing, listen and learn about the kind of singing that has meant somuch to her.

"Singing has always been an important part of our family life, both as a child, when my mother used to lead the mass choir for Bible School each year in Cheraw, and now as a grandfather, singing with my children and grandchildren. Singing has definitely helped to keep us together. Music conveys a message in a way that no other art form can, and is understood by every culture and people. It is part of the glue which holds First Mennonite Church together and, beyond that, holds entire communities together. In fact, Mennonites have long been identified by their superb singing. We must keep our tradition of singing four part harmony strong in our churches if we are going to survive and be different from other Protestant Churches."

Beth Breithaupt http://www.mennomusic.org/Home/Steering_Committee:CB6=bethbreithaupt.html@CB1

was born in Goessel, Kansas but has spent most of her life in the Denver area.  Her ‘menno-music’ roots go way back:  her father graduated from Bethel College with an MBA in music and taught high school vocal music in Goessel, Kansas , Ardmore, Oklahoma and Arvada, Colorado until he retired.  Her mother had a lovely alto voice and hailed from a Kansas Mennonite family where church and music were central to their family life.  Continuing the family tradition, Beth was a music major at Adams State College in Alamosa, Colorado; toured Europe with the Adams State Choir; was very active with Spirituals Project in Denver, as a choir member, member of the Board of Directors and held the Choir Committee Chair position for several years; and is currently a member of the Front Range Mennonite Choir.  “I remember standing between my mom and my dad singing hymns in church.  I wanted to sing soprano, but dad kept telling me I was an alto and gently poked me in the ribs with his elbow if I strayed from the part.  I’d giggle, mom would poke me on the other side - each Sunday it was the same.  It may sound silly, but it was all great fun!  I never feel closer to God than I do when I’m singing those familiar hymns that take me back to my childhood.”

Beth, her mother, father and 3 brothers were charter members of the Arvada Mennonite Church .  Some years after she married, Beth and her husband began attending Peace Mennonite Church and are members there today.
